Which Australia Visa Do UAE Residents Need? Subclass 600 vs eVisitor vs ETA
For most UAE residents, the right visa is the Australia Visitor visa (subclass 600). The cheaper online options, the eVisitor (subclass 651) and the ETA (subclass 601), are limited to a specific list of eligible passports that does not include the UAE or most GCC and South Asian passports.
The deciding factor is your passport, not your residency. If your passport is not on the eVisitor or ETA list, subclass 600 is your route, whatever emirate you live in.
This is the point that trips up more UAE applicants than any other. People hear about a quick Australian e visa a friend used and assume it is open to everyone, then discover it was tied to that friend's passport. Australia offers three visitor routes, but two of them are gated by nationality. Once you know which gate applies to you, the choice is simple. The full application walkthrough lives on our Australia visit visa from Dubai guide.

Which one applies to you
- Hold a UAE, GCC, Indian, Pakistani, or similar passport? The electronic routes are almost certainly closed to you, so subclass 600 is the answer.
- Hold an eligible European or listed passport? You may qualify for the eVisitor or ETA, which is lighter and faster, even while living in the UAE.
- Not sure where your passport sits? This is the single most common question we settle in the first message, so just ask.
Your address does not decide your Australian visa. Your passport does.
Inside subclass 600: the streams
The Visitor visa is not one flat product. It has streams for different situations, and choosing the right one matters:
- Tourist stream. The common choice for a holiday or personal travel.
- Sponsored family stream. When a relative in Australia supports your visit.
- Business visitor stream. For meetings, conferences, or exploratory business, not paid work.
The first thing I check is the passport, not the plan. It decides everything else. Half the confusion I clear up is someone chasing an electronic visa their passport was never eligible for.
